Tatanka and the Fox

Long ago, a very very hungry Fox roamed the plains. It had been hungry for a long time, so much so that its ribs showed. There it was, this hungry Fox, and it ran into a Buffalo. The Fox said to the Buffalo, "I'm so hungry! I think I might die if you do not help me." Buffalo said to Fox, "Foxes aren't to be trusted. I am not going to help you."

"Look at my ribs," continued Fox. "I am starving. I promise to be trustworthy, I am not like the others!"

"Fine," said Buffalo. "I will help you, but you must do as I tell you. Go into that patch of grass there - where we Buffalo have rolled around and it's all squished. Go there and lie down and close your eyes and do not move."

Gratefully Fox went into the squished patch of grass and lay down. With its eyes closed, it heard an approaching thundering of hooves. The stampeding noise grew louder and louder, until, at the last second, Fox opened its eyes and saw the Buffalo about to collide with it. Scared for its life, Fox jumped out of the way.

Buffalo said, "See? You cannot be trusted. Take care, Fox." Buffalo turned to leave.

"I'm so sorry - do not go!" Fox pleaded. "I will do exactly as you say, I just need one more chance. Please!"

"Last chance," offered Buffalo. "Go ahead and lie there again."

Fox, scared as it was, lay itself down in the squished grass one more time. The thunder of the hooves came ever closer, but Fox kept its eyes closed and did not move. Buffalo lowered its head and collided with Fox.

Two Buffalo walked away from the patch of grass that evening.

The Fox-looking-like-buffalo walked around the plains, finding for itself the most scrumptous grass to eat. It fed until it could stand up no longer, and then fed some more. It couldn't remember the last time its tummy had been that full.

The next day, a very hungry looking Fox approached Fox-looking-like-buffalo and said, "I'm so hungry! I think I will die if you do not help me."

Trying to remember the correct procedure, Fox-looking-like-buffalo said, "I cannot help you. Fox cannot be trusted."

But the hungry Fox pleaded and pleaded, until Fox-looking-like-buffalo agreed and told Fox to go and lie down in the squishy patch of grass -- over there, where the Buffalo have rolled in it and it's all flat. "Don't move or open your eyes," Fox-looking-like-buffalo instructed Fox.

But when Fox heard the sound of Fox-looking-like-buffalo's thundering hooves, it got scared and jumped away at the last second.

"See?" said Fox-looking-like-buffalo. "I knew it. You cannot be trusted. Good bye."

Fox pleaded for one more chance, and, remembering the procedure, Fox-looking-like-Buffalo agreed to try again. This time, Fox was able to remain in its place, and Fox-looking-like-buffalo lowered its head and collided with Fox at top speed.

Two emaciated Foxes walked away from the patch of grass that evening.

Fox-who-had-looked-like-buffalo roamed the plains again, until it found Buffalo. "Please help me, I am starving!" it said.

Buffalo looked at Fox and said, "Didn't I already help you? What happenned to you?"

Fox pleaded and pleaded, until Buffalo finally agreed. "Go ahead and lie down in that patch of grass - the squishy one, where we Buffalo have rolled around and it is now all flat."

Fox went, put itself down in the grass, and closed its eyes. There it lie, waiting for the thundering hooves of Buffalo, which approached soon. Buffalo lowered its head and collided with Fox at full speed, and Fox was no more.
